Automatons glided silently through
mazes of wire mesh and cut granite,
searching for and dismantling other
automatons that looked slightly
different from them.

Bulbs of glutinous fluid swell and
burst in the heat, trapping hapless
pedestrians in a weblike mass of
quickly hardening strands.

Crystals of deepest crimson spread
outwards from a single black globe
at the center of the abandoned
industrial complex.

Dissected organs from various rare
species hang scattered about the lab
suspended from small silver hooks at
the ends of long glowing filaments.

Etchings depicting a series of
grisly murders lie stacked in the
corner of an empty, rat-infested
warehouse, surrounded by several
decomposing human bodies.

Floating masses of amorphous iridescent
plastic envelop small fishes and aquatic
birds, slowly digest them, and then take
on their forms.

Ganglia branch from the gently bubbling
vat like overgrown weeds; the ragged,
fibrous tendrils arch across the lab and
into a battery of rheostats that collectively
confer a limited autonomy to the brain from
which they sprout.

Hysteria and mass suicide followed the
accidental release of evidence that the
apes are not in fact our ancestors, but
are rather our descendants.

Ignition of the atmosphere was not only
discovered to be theoretically possible,
but was in fact the actual outcome the
first anti-matter bomb test, which of
course ended up being the last as well.

Jetsam from the alien carrier craft was
categorically dismissed by scientists
and air force officials as a clever hoax
until some of the items were brought to
life by a dedicated and ingenious madman
who used them to brutally subjugate most
of the interesting places on the planet.

Kaleidoscopic swirls filled the victim's
fevered vision, pulling him inexorably
inwards, downwards, unaware of the
great petal-like folds of salivating
flesh that gently enclosed him on
every side.

Laboriously the man climbed stair after
stair with his booty, winding his way up
through the dark, cold, stone viscera of
the subterranean labyrinth, only to
realize too late that he had left the
key to its great iron door with his dead
partner in the burial chamber miles below.

Miniature metallic clamps hold several dozen
electrodes in place on the patient's scalp,
while several larger ones secure his limbs
and midsection, preventing any self-inflicted
bodily damage when the current is turned up.

Negative entropy was the official explanation
given for the unexpected implosion of several
downtown office buildings this afternoon,
caused by a sudden ninety-seven percent drop
in air pressure within them.

Operant conditioning was found to be preferable
to more traditional forms of education among
children between the ages of two and twelve;
most children finishing the program showed
a strong interest in marketing and business
careers, a strong desire for wealth and power,
and only minimal vestiges of compassion and
personal ethics.

Polyp-like growths similar to miniature sea
anemones were encountered during the victim's
autopsy; the baffling part was that unlike
the rest of the body, they were still alive
and growing.

Questioned by police about the wholesale slaughter
of his wife and children, the man simply grinned
and blew his own head off.

Roots from the great black oak burrowed like ebony
worms, up through the marble tiles of the castle floor,
rising to strangle the suprised king who had foolishly
sentenced his magician to death the day before.

Scaffolding branched upwards as far as the eye could
see; glinting in the fading light of the great red
sun, it was the only artifact upon the entire planet:
a monumental arch stretching between landmasses,
incomplete and desolate as if abandoned in mid-
construction.

Theory indicated that the vectored-boson containment
field would provide complete protection from a thermo-
nuclear blast and thus make SDI a reality; when the
field was tested, the contained explosion was reflected
completely inwards as expected, but with the unforseen
and initially unrecognized side-effect of creating
a small black hole that eventually engulfed the earth
and all the laser and missile platforms orbiting it.

Uniformity has always been the hallmark of any great
society; our society has greatly profited by its
program of personality renormalizing, a simple and
effective psycho-medical process mandatorily performed
by the state on all citizens reaching the age of majority.

Vials of various liquids, some brightly colored, some
colorless, some opaque, and others clear, lined the
shelves of the old man's basement; all were neatly
arranged, save one, which lay shattered on the ground,
next to some old, tattered, and very empty clothes.

Winds blew harshly over the arid, desolate terrain,
bringing with them ashes and the scent of death; in
the distance, the vast columns of smoke that were
cities rose like pillars, supporting the ceiling of
a vast chamber of horrors devised by mankind for use
on himself.

Xenografting of limbs from various species became a
fad in the early seventies; it was quite common to
see leopard and panther tails on the jet-setters so
often photographed at hollywood and manhattan parties;
of course, once true enzymatic manipulation of the
phenotype was perfected, all such "graft-jobs"
became passe.

Yellow blossoms grew in clumps up and down the hillside;
nobody thought much of them until they began to retain
their brilliant yellow glow after the sun went down, not
all of them, mind you, but only certain ones in patterns
that sometimes repeated night after night.

Zombiism is often considered to be a myth or a dead science,
but such suppositions are far from the truth; in reality,
many cases of this form of mind control have been reported
in the west, chiefly caused by reciting or reading a long
list of jarring descriptions containing a series of subliminal
commands that gives the author complete control of the victim's
mind at the utterance of a single key word.
