Some people firmly believe that gardening consists of weeding and of watching the grass grow. Watching the grass grow is the province of those who only have a lawn, and We Know Who They Are.
We have a big garden, although last year we were far too ambitious, so we're toning it down. Anyone else interested in Square Foot Gardening?
We promised to start planting before June this year. Really. Even though we have clay soil and need a pickaxe and a jackhammer to prepare each bed. Even though drainage is terrible and sunlight only really covers about half of the garden each day. We had this party over Memorial Day Weekend that we were preparing for for weeks, so we did no gardening. We're planting in June again. Sigh. I also promised myself to put down mulch plastic this year. We have to go over it all with the weeding hoe first. Then we plant through the mulch plastic. Then we have much less weeding and I can stay out of the sun. (I must admit, though, that the act of pulling out huge clumps of weeds and burying them in the compost heap was really very therapeutic on bad days. I enjoyed indulging in fantasies of mass-murder.
Despite all that griping, it was a good-enough year to keep us fooled that we can do it all over again, only please, smaller this time, hence Square Head Gardening (as jfw calls it). We had small yields last year, but it really showed what we could do this coming summer. The Goddess Of Gardening is such a Temptress, such a Tease.
I still promise not to put zucchini in your mailbox. Want some habaneros?
