Bra FAQ #3: Places to look for lingerie & lingerie supplies This is the long-awaited alt.sewing Bra FAQ, now seperated from the Underwire FAQ, and into several sections itself, due to their increasing sizes. In some of them you will find addresses for bra patterns I have so far found with mention of mail order places that carry supplies, with as much detail as people could muster. (There has been much discussion on alt.sewing about whether or not people like underwires, see a use for them, need them; so since I need them, I've taken a keen interest in what's what with underwires. Call me selfish. I have tried to confine that mostly to the Underwire FAQ, which see.) There are now five files in all: Underwire FAQ: Wherein the author has completely nerded out on underwires. Contains some mail order lingerie supplies addresses. See Bra FAQ #3 for more. Bra FAQ #1: Bra Fit & Fashion Contained a discussion on people's complaints about bras and how to measure for proper fit, and other things in those areas. Bra FAQ #2: Bra making Tutorial Covered what I have learned about how to design and sew a bra, with contributions from the net. Bra FAQ #3: Places to look for lingerie & lingerie supplies Covers further the issues of finding the supplies for sewing lingerie, including mailorder bra patterns, lingerie supplies, and mailorder bra sources. It includes some addresses for swimwear, as well. (One so far.) Bra FAQ #4: Bra Fabric & Anatomy Will cover discussion of specifications for bra fabric like the RTW ones are made from, and some pointers to finding it (see Bra FAQ 2). There is also a stretch chart that people can make up themselves to check the stretch of fabric and elastics and a discussion in one section on not only lingerie fabric descriptions, but on my approximations on bra anatomy. I welcome anyone's comments and additions, but I don't have the facilities to maintain this as an automatic posting (although I *might* be able to set this up). I hope people will find _and_make_ these a useful set of files. I think that a visit to a full-service lingerie shop is one of the nicest things a woman can do for her daily comfort. The bras cost $2-$4 more there than they do in department stores, but the professional fitting is well worth the money. I've found that when I changed sizes and had trouble finding a bra that fit well, they were able to help. Just as with other RTW, some bras are cut fuller than others, some are cut for more rounded women, etc. A professional fitting (not necessarily just a measuring) won't necessarily help women of unusual size, but it will almost certainly help those among us who are average, but just don't currently have comfortable bras. -- --Beth Weiss bweiss@cs.arizona.edu ============ From: sastoen@lamar.ColoState.EDU (Susan Stoen) Organization: Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Date: Thu, 7 Jul 1994 00:42:44 GMT Subject: Re: Bra size Erica Duddy (erica@solo) wrote: : Coeli (coeli@aol.com) wrote: : : buying a 38 E. There was a time in my life when I thought being 34C was large. Then when I was pregnant I thought 36DD was large, now having been left after pregnancy and nursing with somewhat of a weight problem and an odd shape I'd be happy to be DD again. At least with a DD you have a hope of just walking into a store and finding at least one bra in your size. Most of the time I go braless. I don't have any problems with this and so have trouble understanding the arguments for underwiring. When I do want to wear a bra, the only ones I have found that fit comfortably are a pull on style sold by Decent Exposures. I mail order them. They are supportive enough without underwiring that even when I was nursing I was able to run in them without any pain. They come in three fabrics, cotton, cotton/lycra, and velour. The velour has less stretch, and provides more support. I do fine with the other two, and find the cotton/lycra more attractive so go with that. A similarly afflicted friend of mine finds that she needs the extra support of the velour bra. They also come in a variety of neat colours. I am not in anyway associated with this company except as a very satisfied customer. sph > -- "Return, good Catesby, to the gracious duke:" Shakespeare, Richard III, III, vii, 65 af280@freenet.carleton.ca ========================= On the issue of ethnicity and where to find larger bras, Chip Maguire replied: From: maguire@it.kth.se Date: Wed, 12 Oct 94 18:04:42 +0100 To: babs@jfwhome.funhouse.com (Babs Woods) In-Reply-To: babs@jfwhome.funhouse.com's message of 10 Oct 1994 13:55:23 -0400 Subject: more on bra sizing charts For larger sizes check: Bavaria (and the southern part of the former east germany) Israel Finland Romania Hungary Czech Republic Chip [Much of the header is gone, but Chip actually lives in Sweden. --babs] ======================== As I was writing the first draft of the Underwire FAQ, I got mail from Marie-Christine Mahe: To: babs@jfwhome.funhouse.com (Babs Woods) From: mahe-marie-christine@yale.edu (Marie-Christine Mahe) Subject: Re: another bra pattern query Date: Wed, 29 Jun 1994 11:55:22 In article <2uqg9b$sng@jfwhome.funhouse.com> babs@jfwhome.funhouse.com (Babs Woods) writes: >(I know, I know, but she's almost six now!) daughter> Can't think too far ahead :-)... Delivery-Date: Sun Jun 13 17:51:35 2004 Hi Babs-- I just spent some time reading (yes, I read them all!) the bra FAQs. I am also interested in a bra that fits Anyway, in response to the FAQs, I thought I'd let you know that Elizabeth Lee Designs has a webpage now at www.ElizabethLee.com with lots of cool stuff for nursing Moms and for Moms who sew for their kids (Elizabeth has 5 or 6 kids of her own, and she sews for them). Her patterns are for nursingwear, however, if someone wants to learn to sew, they should get her patterns if they are too obstinate to buy some good lessons or books! She did buy the Babe Too line several years ago from Jean Hoelscher (I think that's the correct spelling), but has gradually phased those patterns out as they did not sell well. She also sells RTW bras, including a few non-nursing styles; her staff is very sweet and helpful when you call for help, too. Elizabeth was a home ec teacher in junior and high school, taught sewing, so her patterns are some of the easiest to follow I've ever found. I taught myself to sew when I was nursing my premature son and needed some modest clothing for that purpose. Her catalog and newsletter also have lots of general sewing tips, as well as occasional bra tips. There is also another list, the Nursing Mother's Sewing List, at www.nmsl.org that has occasional discussions about bras. Several years ago, we were all ready to start a sew-along making our own bras; the archives may or may not be available, depending on several factors, including time that the volunteer moms have to keep everything on-line. A lot of times the larger sizes come in only one or two colors for the style in the Bali, etc. outlet catalogue and I assume in many others as well. This style has adjustable and removable straps. They carry the Special Request bra by Glamorize, a strapless underwire that comes in 34-44B, C, D, DD that I wish came in F, too but it doesnŐt here. They also have a Maidenform underwire that comes in 34-42C and 34-42D, DD. These bras, and the rest (all softcups) on the page all seem a bit expensive, even for bras, though. To be sure, they do carry other things, but these are some of the bras they carry. The bra brands they carry are, by name: Glamorize (Special Request), goddess, Maidenform, Jodee, Playtex, Exquisite Form (one of which is the old, hideous, cotton softcup type with the open slide hardware on the straps). They also carry shoes in N (AA), M (B), W (D), WW (EE) for women. There is also a catalogue called Intimate Appeal that they carry. Their automatic customer service email response assured me I would be contacted very soon about this. Not a word until today. In the interim, I had gone elsewhere and ordered the same items, same size, same colour, slightly different price. They arrived from the other purveyor promptly.
